Developing writing skills through real-life descriptions

EXPLANATION

In this activity students have to do different interactive Edcaplay activities, with the final aim to be able to describe a classmate. This final writing will be made in Educaplay as an "open answer" activity.

STEPS AND ACTIVITIES

They will frst start doing a vocabulary review, matching words with their definition, and they also activate descriptive vocabulary.

Afterwards, they will play a game to see examples of how to make a description, and they will do it by filling in the blanks in a paragraph

To finish, they will have to make a description of one of his or her classmates and give it to us.

PEDAGOGIC JUSTIFICATION

This activity follows a task-based-learning approach. Students use the language to solve games in which they are emotionally engaged, as they are having fun while also learning. They use the language to talk about their classmates in a real context, rather than simply copying something without truly learning.

Regarding the objective, students have a clear goal: to produce a written description of a classmate. Behind this objective, we can see that students are encouraged to express themselves, communicate their ideas, give opinions, and learn the language at the same time.

Before starting, there are two preparatory activities that serve as a warm-up and act as scaffolding to support students and prevent them from experiencing excessive difficulty when completing the final task.

Additionally, this activity promotes social interaction and personal expression, since students must describe a classmate. It is simple and easy to implement, and it can be adapted to different educational levels with more or less complexity.

IT IS NOT A SIMPLE ACTIVITY

It is a task because:

- Students use English to achieve a real life goal: describing someone they know

- The writing has a purposE

- Students use their own language resources

- The task ends in a concrete communicative product: a published description

- It can assess the communication, , not only the accuracy
